I think it is the most interesting thing Meta has shipped in years, and I think it might be the end of BeReal.

There is a particular kind of photo that never makes it onto Instagram. It is slightly blurry. Someone is mid-sentence. The lighting is wrong. It is also, usually, the photo you would actually want to keep, because it looks like your life rather than your highlight reel.

For about a decade, Instagram has had no real home for that photo. As of this week, it does. It is called Instagram Instants, and the more I use it, the more I think it quietly goes back to what Instagram was made for.

Meta rolled Instants out globally on 13 May. The description it leads with is refreshingly plain: “a new no-edit camera just for friends.” That is genuinely what it is. You open it, you take a photo, you send it. There are no filters, no retouching, no uploading something you took earlier and sat on for three days. There is an optional caption, but it goes on before you take the shot rather than after, so it can never be the polished afterthought it is everywhere else. Most of the time it is just the photo. You are meant to commit to the moment, not curate it.

The photos disappear once they have been seen, and after 24 hours they are gone whether anyone opened them or not. There is no viewer list, so nobody can audit who looked. Reactions and replies are private, visible only to you and the person who sent it, and replies land in your DMs, which is where, in my experience, the real conversations were always happening anyway.

Trying it for yourself

If you want to have a go, it is easier than the announcement makes it sound. Open your Instagram inbox, the same place you go for DMs, and look in the bottom right corner for a small stack of photos. Tap that, and you are in the camera. Add a caption if you want one, take your shot, and choose who sees it: your Close Friends list, or mutuals, meaning followers you also follow back. That is the whole thing.

A few details worth knowing. Your Instants are saved privately for up to a year, even though they vanish for everyone else, and you can stitch them into a recap to share to your Stories if you want a more public version later. If you send something you immediately regret, there is an undo button that pulls it back before it has been opened. Recipients cannot screenshot or screen record. And if someone is sending you more than you want, you can hold the stack, swipe, and quietly stop receiving them. There is also a standalone Instants app rolling out in some countries for people who want the camera even faster, though the feature inside Instagram is the main event.

The part nobody is saying out loud

Here is where I want to be honest about what I think is really going on.

Instants is, fairly obviously, Instagram’s answer to BeReal. The unedited photo, the in-the-moment pressure, the friends-only audience, the quiet resistance to performance: BeReal built its whole identity on those ideas, and Instants has just absorbed every one of them.

I think this is the end of BeReal. Or at least the beginning of the end.

Not because Instants is better. In some ways it is less pure. BeReal’s daily random notification was a genuinely clever piece of behavioural design, and Instants has nothing as disciplined. But BeReal’s problem was never the idea. It was distribution. BeReal needed you to download a separate app, convince your friends to download the same separate app, and then all remember to open it. Instants needs none of that. It is sitting inside an app that you and everyone you know already open several times a day. The friends are already there. The habit is already there.

BeReal was sold to Voodoo in 2024 for around 500 million euros, after losing most of the momentum that once made it the most talked-about app in the App Store. It was wounded already. Instants is Meta doing what Meta does: watching a smaller company prove an idea, then rebuilding that idea with the one advantage the smaller company could never buy. We have seen this film before, with Stories and Snapchat. We are now watching the sequel.

Why this matters more than the competition

I do not want to leave it at competitive strategy, though, because that is not the part that actually interests me.

What interests me is that Instants is built with no public metrics at all. No likes to count, no views to chase, no audience to perform for. For a company whose entire business was built on measurable attention, that is a remarkable thing to ship. It is Instagram admitting, in product form, that the public feed has become too performative for genuine connection, and that the real connection moved to DMs and group chats a long time ago.

I see this every day in my work. The students I work with are far more willing to be themselves in a small, private space than on a public grid. Give them somewhere they can react without an audience watching, and they actually show up. Instants is, more or less, that space, built by the biggest platform in the world.

I have always believed in moments, and in real, meaningful connections over performance. For a long time it felt like the entire industry was building in the opposite direction. Instants does not fix everything, and I am wary of being too optimistic about anything Meta ships. But it is the first time in a while that a major platform has built something that points back towards what I think social media was supposed to be for.

The blurry, mid-sentence, badly lit photo finally has a home. I think that matters more than it looks.

Introducing Instants (Screenshot from the Instagram app)

React (Screenshot from the Instagram app)

Instagram has just launched a no-edit camera built only for friends.
